BEYOND SHIRDI ? Stories of the Living Presence of Sai Baba: K. Venkataraman; Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Kulapati Munshi Marg, Mumbai-400007. Rs. 135.
As a 16-year-old teenager, he came to Shirdi and lived among the lowly with a spiritual dignity of his own. An abandoned mosque became his residence, and he named it Dwaraka Mai.
When he passed away, his mortal remains were interred in a Krishna temple known as Samadhi Mandir.
Sai Baba (1838-1918) is today revered widely and there are huge temples built for him all over India. The fire (dhuni) that Sai Baba tended in Dwaraka Mai continues to burn, and is revered both by Muslims (especially Sufis for whom tending a fire is a holy act) and by Hindus (who consider the flame as the priest of the sacrifice).
Obviously he stood for human unity in an Advaitic ambience, for the sum of his teaching is his statement: `Sabka Malik Ek'' (One Lord for all). There was nothing mysterious about his life which was lived amongst villagers with a simple nobility, helping them with his blessings. The offerings from his devotees were immediately given away to people in need. And yet, Sai Baba''s life has been turned into one of the most miracle-ridden hagiologies of modern India.
Experiences

Beyond Shirdi follows the same path. Since this collection contains short stories, it becomes doubly difficult to suspend willingly one''s disbelief. Are the miracles reported by him authentic? Perhaps yes, perhaps not. Again, the writings may not be considered short stories at all. They are just pellets of experience and no more. What is important about this book is Venkataraman''s steady faith in Sai Baba''s grace. Hence his characters are able to visualise the presence of Sai Baba in their everyday life.
The ochre-robed Sannyasi in Prayag, the curious incident of Krishna who was enabled to see the tiny icon of Ramlala in Dakshineswar, the faith that can see Sai Baba in a snake in Coimbatore, the grace of Sai Baba that can overlook a serious lacuna in Nalini''s passport when she travels to London and many such inputs make the volume interesting.
None of them will pass the test of rationalism, but who cares for rationalism in an irrational world?
At least here we have nectarean guardianship provided by an immense faith in a Sufi saint. And we need all the faith we can muster to live in the 21st Century.
