THE INDIAN SCENE:

As Indian economy is booming and as the IT sector is advancing, the problems of poverty here are beng replaced by the problems of prosperity.

The impact of commerce is being felt in every area of existence replacing old values with modern permissiveness slowly and subtly. The youth exposed to newer avenues of pleasure, entertainment are turning consumerist--a trend that is being encouraged by the media.

The result is a host of youth issues, challenges hitherto unheard of. Imitating the West leads to import of problems that are associated with new life styles.

A land that cherished strong family ties, conservative outlook, simplicity and non-violence is faced with the challenges of economic growth. Today, drug addiction, diabetes, divorce, heart ailments are the topics that take the centre stage in the media. With it, medical treatment becomes another commercial activity intending to take full advantage of new problems and sicknesses.

Watching the drastic changes in the Western society, Malcolm Muggeridge kept on depicting the madness that had overtaken society over there and warned that the nominally Christian societies are obsessed with a death wish.

Indians are moving in the same direction as the West with the pursuit of happiness. In the words of Muggeridge,"wealth increasing for evermore and its beneficiaries rich in hire purchase, stupified with the telly and sex," are entering a new kingdom with broad highwasy and multitudinous shining aerials...The backdrop is the mushroom cloud. He meant the atomic threat and violent wars looming large in the horizon.

Seeing the rat race, he concluded: " I disbelieve in progress, the pursuit of happiness and all the concomitat notions and projects for creating a society in which human beings find ever greater contenment by being given in ever greater abundance the means to satisfy their material and bodily hopes and desires. In other words, I consider that the way of life in urbanised rich countries as it exists today, and as it is likely to go on developing, is probably the most degraded and unillumined ever to come to pass on earth."

Against the materialistic philosophies and materialist utopias that had only proved deadly to human happiness, Muggeridge held out that the only hope for man lay in the person, life and teaching of Jesus Christ. The terrorism, refugee problems in the wake of racial conflicts and global warming and the arms race point to an urgency to stop the heedless overexploitation of resouces. It calls for changes in life styles, compassion and unity on a world wide scale. So a developing nation like India must be warned against following the western model. We need many Muggerdiges with powerful pens so that the race to destruction is not speeded up.
