Review

The heroine of the Book is Rani of Jhansi, Lakshmi Bai; Jhansi being a small state of presently Madhya Pradesh of India. No Indian born after the incidents of the mutiny of 1857 is unaware of the name and heroics of Rani of Jhansi. No other women has been so idolized in India, where women were hardly known for any act after the Vedic age, where the likes of Savitri and Sita were deemed as the epitome of virtuosity. And this lady was known for her manly valour and power that once infused fear in the hearts of British Empire!

The book is hard bound and is printed very neat and clean. As often is the case, there is no type-error in the book and it is very cleanly formatted. Once you start reading it, it is hard to put it aside and you feel yourself riveted to its content. Moreover, the book also gives a befitting credit to the publishers who publish such kind of books that are very useful and factful for reading.

The book is a wonderful piece of research and facts that analyse and show the multifaceted Rani, who was valiant and at the same time had a great knack of respecting Indian customs in her inimitable ways. She was beautiful in her body and also in her thoughts and intellect. She loved her country and her countrymen, and if they needed the guidance and leadership, she was ready for it though at that time in India, women hardly did anything except the home chores!

One of the salient feature of struggle marshalled by Rani Jhansi against the British Empire was the inculcation of women in military tasks. It is mentioned in this book that the Rani trained the women of Jhansi in military art and had a strong contingent of women who were well apt in performing various tasks during war. It is indeed noticable that even the British historians have mentioned this fact, that while the war was being raged, they saw many ladies supplying ammunition and feed to the cannons. They were also doing repair works of walls whenever there was any breach or something from the attack of the British Army.

The book is not another one added to already many written books about this single heroine of woman-power, but is a beautiful narration of the events that spanned the life of Rani, and one feels as if the events are literally lived by while reading the pages of the book. The Author must be given the credit of his language, which is riveting and captivating up to the extent that chapter after chapter one reads the book, and at the end of the book wants more pages to listen what the author has to say!

Books about Rani Jhansi have been written in almost all languages of India, and as the author himself points out that she is famous in India just like St. Juan of Arc in France. However, it is indeed unfortunate to know that no good quality material is available that is factful and correct--whatever children of general people learn about this great lady, they pick it up from legends or heard stories. I believe that this book is good one, as it is based upon certain research work, which the author has undertaken.

The book is published by Roli Books, which is very famous for publishing such kinds of books. I hope the author, who has also written some other books about independence strugglers, and the publishers would bring out more such volumes that would be based on fact and research, so that the general public can have clearer and true picture before them.
