The Alchemist
(Paolo Coehlo)
The Alchemist: A Fable of Journey to One?s Heart Try to recall the stories of the Hare and the Tortoise, the Greedy Dog and the Fox and the Vineyard. Also, try to read Bob Ong?s Alamat ng Gubat. These stories have animals as main characters and capable of speaking a language. Other features of these stories are their representation in the society and carry a valuable lesson for everyone. These stories are called fables. Recently, I read a fable. Its characters have representation in the society and contain indeed a valuable lesson for everybody, especially to those who dream, either big or small. The only characteristic missing is there were no animals involved primarily in the story and pretty much, they weren?t talking either. Hence, the fable I read was a novel. It was the Alchemist written by Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho. The novel focused on the journey of a young shepherd searching for his Personal Treasure by listening to his heart. During that journey, he encountered various people that more or less had influenced him in taking that voyage. One of those interesting people was the Alchemist, a 200 year old Arab, who taught the young man life?s greatest lesson. That lesson played an integral part of fulfilling his dream, which is finding his Treasure. At first, I didn?t understand why it was called a fable but after finishing the book I realized that it was indeed a fable. Those people the shepherd met served as symbols of different faces in our society. At some point of our life, we encountered this set of people and in some way have influenced as in our taken paths. Also, the valuable lesson emphasized by the book teaches us on how we can succeed in our journey of realizing our dreams. For the record, The Alchemist was the first book so far I never want to end. If the was a never ending story, I wanted it to be The Alchemist. The novel was magically written, perhaps the fit description to the book, thus making me to admire Coelho?s wonderful and brilliant skill in writing. To those who seek for their own treasure, this fable can serve as an instrument of your journey.
