The Zahir

We can consider that the novel ?The Zahir? from Paulo Coelho is the perfect sequel to another book of the same writer: The Alchemist. This story is about loving and losing, and the author gets back to the Santiago?s pilgrimage theme. The main character in the novel is a famous writer and lots of references of wealthy, fame and fortune and their relevance are found, some concepts about the nature of marriage are brought alongside. The character is deeply connected to spiritual matters, sets sail on a pilgrimage with his wife by the Road of Santiago and when they return she leaves without any further explanation. Despite of the police consider it a terrorist action, since she was a war correspondant (journalist) in the past, he believes she left him by her own reasons. He gets so obsessed in realizing the reasons for her sudden departure that she becomes his ?Zahir? ? word that in Arabic means: somebody or something we can?t forget and always present in our memories, becoming an obsession.
