The narrator tells us about the trip he took from Lisbon to Santarem while describes the beautiful and peculiar scenario he goes through, meanwhile he let us know, by his analysis, about various human aspects and characters he faces along the way. When arriving at Santarem''s Valley, he brings us a story of a tipically romantic girl: Green Eyed Joaninha, who fell for his cousin Carlos recently came from England. But he shows himself incapable of deciding between the love of a single woman or many women relationships, and goes back to England. The poor nightingale''s girl - a.k.a. Joaninha - can''t help feeling so miserable and dies. When she dies the Valley loses its freshness and luxurious green becoming a dry and sad land. The narrator returns Lisbon.
