The Princess Of Cleves
(Madame de Lafayette)

Publicidade
Madame de Lafayette, a "precieuse" woman, married to an older man who she hardly loves and soulmate''s to La Rochefoucault, publishes in 1678 a novel, which she first denies having written but whose success will bring her posterity; the novel shows tremendous psychological analysis and modernity when retracing the story of a passionate and impossible love story between two lovers. During the reign of Henri II, Miss de Chartres, a young woman raised strictly by her mother, resigns herself to marry without love the Prince of Cleves, who loves her with passion. During a ball, she meets a young gentleman, Mr de Nemours, falls in love with him and makes him understand so. Summoned by her dying mother, she confesses her feelings to her husband who, upon her own request, sends her away from Coulommiers.  But whilst she pines in her retreat, the Prince of Cleves is taken over by jealousy; Nemours, having learned of her hidding place, attemps to see her again, without success. The husband however imagines that the lovers have met again and despite his wife''s denial, he becomes ill and dies. Madame de Cleves could then surrender her love to Nemours but remains faithful to her husband''s memory and withdraws from society. The novel was poorly reviewed by women, Madame de Sevigne, Madame de Lafayette''s best friend, refers to the novel as an extravagenza, but this novel is a modern novel. Beyond the detailed description of the court''s closeted world, where everyone spies on everyone else, and where everything is known, this novel about marriage and sacrifice has kept a strong psychological identity and has paved the way to many authors to come. Raymond Radiguet has based his own "Count d''Orgell''s ball" on it.
