Drowning Man
(Michael Robotham)
DETECTIVE Inspector Vincent Ruiz is found in the Thames with a bullet wound in his leg. Waking up after six days in coma, he does not remember how he came to be there and why he was shot. It is but the beginning of a nightmare. Ruiz fights to remember, to bring some semblance of sanity into his life because everyone around him knows something ? only he is left out of it. Slowly Ruiz brings to life the events that led to the shooting. The memory loss is frustrating and Robotham gets the readers into a state of desperation wishing Ruiz?s memory would return. It does? but much, much later. Drowning Man is the second book, the first being S uspect. Some characters, psychologist Joe O? Loughlin for one, make a reappearance. But this time Ruiz is the hero and not O? Loughlin as in Suspect.Investigations O?Loughlin shows Ruiz a picture of seven-year-old Mickey Carlyle who was kidnapped three years ago. At that time police did not find any clues and she was never found. Everyone believes her to be dead. Everyone, except Ruiz. Ruiz traces the incident, following every clue, every lead, hampered by a nasty cop Keebal, but aided by his partner, a young Sikh woman named Ali. The police department is not really convinced about Ruiz?s amnesia. They believe there are many holes in his story. Why, for instance, did he sign out his service pistol when he was on leave? There are props that normally crop in any crime situation ? the crime lord (this time Russian-born), a missing child, the paedophile, the cache of diamonds and more. Robotham convincingly weaves them all into the story and as the plot thickens it becomes clear who is sympathetic and who isn?t. Ruiz?s relationship with Ali is touching in its simplicity and trust. O? Loughlin suffers from Parkinson?s and Ruiz?s relationship with him is warm and easy, cushioning the nastiness of the ?bad cop? Keebal. A thrilling book that keeps you on edge wishing Ruiz would get his memory back..
