Lakkundi in Gadag taluk, is a prominent place in the history of Karnataka and is also known for its beautiful temples. Earlier it has 101 temples and 101 wells are there.
Lakkundi, which is 12 km from the district headquarters, was once known for its cultural and literary opulence. Known as Lokkigundi in the earlier days, the village finds mention in inscriptions dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. In fact, in these inscriptions Lakkundi or Lokkigundi has been compared to Amaravati, the capital of lord Indra in terms of affluence.
According to historical documents available, Lakkundi was a place of prominence during the ninth and 14th centuries and it came under the rule of Chalukya, Yadava and Hoysala kings. Historical documents say that Lakkundi was the capital of Hoysala King Eradane Ballala (Veeraballala) in 1192 A.D.
Attimabbe''s karmabhoomi
Lakkundi was also known as the "Karmabhoomi" of Queen Attimabbe who was an ardent follower of Jainism and known for her philanthropic works, which fetched her the title "Daana Chintamani." It is said that the queen who lived in the 11th century, built many temples and Jain basadis and also sank wells for the benefit of people. The State Government has instituted an award in her name (Daana Chintamani), which is conferred during the Lakkundi Utsav.
It is not just Jainism that prospered in Lakkundi. The literary work "Shoonya Sampadane" mentions the presence of Shivasharana Ajaganna and Sharane Muktayakka who spread the message of Basaveshwara in Lakkundi.
Although it is said that Lakkundi had hundreds of temples and wells once upon a time, only a few exist now. The Mumbai State Gazetteer mentions 13 temples here namely Kashi Visveshwara, Mallikarjun, Halagunda Basavanna, Viurpaksha, Laxmianarayana, Manikeshwara, Virabhadara, Nanneshwara, Someshwara, Neelakanteshwara, Kumbar Siddeshwara or Nadayadeva, Nagaradeva and Vishwantha temple. According to historians, all these temples have the architectural style of Kalyana Chalukyas.
From the point of view of architecture, Kashi Vishweshwara temple at Lakkundi is considered prominent. Nanneshwar Temple that is located next to this temple is also considered an important monument. And then there is the Brahma Jinayala, which was built by Queen Attimabbe.
At Lakkundi, sculptors have exhibited their skills even in the construction of wells. Among them Chateer Bavi, Kanne Bavi and Musukina Bavi are famous for their carvings.
According to historians, Lakkundi was also known for its "tankashale" (mint). It is said that Lakkundi was once a centre for minting gold coins, which were called as "Lokkigadyana" and "Lokkinishta."
