The Wonderful Adventures Of Nils Holgerssons
(Selma Lagerlof)
Selma writes about a small, naughty, spoiled boy, Nils, who does only what he pleases and bothers everyone around, people, animals, elves. But one night he remains home alone and gets what he deserves: the punishment for his naughtiness, for his selfishnessand naughtiness. An elf turns him into a kind of a humanly cricket who jumps, wails, but all for nothing, cause he finds himself in a hostile world, where he is the the most powerless, the most unwanted, the most insignificant. Like Gulliver in the world of giants, Nils is the tiniest one who cannot do, anymore, the things he enjoyed doing. He evades from this world, to which he no longer feels he belongs, and goes on a long journey with the wild geese. The one who puts a good word for him, to be accepted by the leading heads of the flying community, is, unexpectedly, the young gander from his own yard, whom he used to scare so much before. So he starts travelling on the back of his gander, all over Sweden, in the same time starting to learn his own lessons: about friendship, courage, kindness. He gets fond of the wild birds and tries to protect them of the bad fox, helps them and then others of his own kind who are in need for help. Nils is a sort of a Pinocchio who for turning to humans, learns to be human, loving for being loved, making others happy for being happy. The lesson is simple, as old as time, getting rid of selfishness you discover the real life, your inner good is the key for opening the others?hearts doors. Of course the spell is broken and he comes back home, all brand new.
