The Deadhouse Gatesl A Tale Of The Malazan Book Of The Fallen
(Steven Erikson)

Publicidade
Erikson returns with his second installment in the Malazan series.

As with his debut novel Erikson craftily weaves multiple stories together. The pace of his novels is relentless and realising that he has so much content to cover in a 900+ page novel he has thankfully cut any boring bits.

After saving Darujistan from the Jaghut Tyrant, Bridgeburners Kalam and Fiddler vow to take the once possessed girl Sorry home to her father on the Itkanese coast. We soon learn that Kalam''s agenda has little to do with the girl and more to do with revenge on the Empress Laseen.

Meanwhile the daughter of a once affluent family, and sister to the new Adjunct, Fesalin, is sent to the infamous Otataral mines off the coast of Unta. Though she is seemingly punished by her sister Fesalin is provided with two bodyguards, Heboric Ghosthands a failed historian who has had his hands removed, and Baudin, a thug who just happens to be one of the old Emperor Kalenveds secret assassins called a Talon.

After escaping from the Otataral Mines with help from the Imperial historian Duiker and his mage friend Kulp, Fesalin and her guides find themselves heading into the holy desert of Raraku where waits the Apocalypes.

The continent of Seven Cities is under threat by a renewed Holy War lead by the seer Sha''ik and her companions Toblakai and Leoman of the Flails. This uprising sparks the Chain of Dogs, a last ditched effort by Fist Coltaine to lead his armies and the malazan refugees out of Seven Cities and to the safety of the citadel at Aren.

Hounded by the armies of the Apocalypse, Coltaine, an uncharismatic and stoic leader uses his Wickan warlocks to call forth the unsated spirits of the desert to aid them in their march. It is only within sight of the walls of Aren that tragedy happens. Poor old Squint.

Deadhouse gates loses some of the very special characters of the first novel (don''t fret they come back in the third installment)but also introduces some new ones, such as Iskaral Pust, Coltaine and the mad sailors Stormy and Gesler.

Erikson is a master of mixing high violence and suspense with wit and humour. Everyone of his 100+ characters over the Malazan series are developed through their actions and thoughts. Like in any good novel the characters become part of your lives and it is Deadhouse Gates that the reader will find this starting to happen.

Enoy. I did.
