The Kings Who Built France: Louis Xiv
(George Bordonove)

Publicidade
As soon as the news were known, almost all of Europe reacted.  The English and the Dutch accused Louis XIX of being disloyal, despute his efforts to prove that the Kingdoms of France and Spain would remain perfectly distinct from one another and that accepting Charles II''s testament (the last King of Spain at that time) did not really benefit him.  The Emperor formally protested and started to seek allies in case of an upcoming war.  The Elector of Brandenburg was the first to ally: he took advantage of the situation to get his title as King of Prussia acknolwedged.  In exchange, Pope Clement VI, the Elector of Bavaria and the Duke of Savoy, always looking to benefit and wishing a crown for himself, acknowledged Philip V as King of Spain.  The Netherlands and the Italian principalities: territories under the Madrid''s rule followed the same pattern.  England (and therefore Holland) held a not so hostile stance. These two countries did not oppose to Philip V but needed some conditions to be met.  It is certain that Louis XIV was very much aware of the danger he was in and of the Emperor''s inablity to fight alone, and he would have agreed to some arrangements.  But Philip V had been welcome with open arms by the Spaniards and could therefore not deceive them and agree to a dismantling, even partial, of their Empire.  They relied on France to defend their possessions.
