A Story Without End
(khaja zakiuddin)
A STORY WITHOUT END Once upon a time there was a king. The king was very fond of stories. He had many courtiers in his court. They told the king stories to amuse him. The king never got tired of listening to stories. He never got satisfied with stories lasting for a few hours. He desired to listen to story without an end. So he declared in his kingdom that whoever told him a story without an END would be rewarded with half of the kingdom or beheaded when the story teller ceased to tell the story. The reward of story-telling was lucrative and the unishment was severe. Yet many people came forward with long stories. But they ultimately stopped after a few hours. This would make the king angry and they were put to death. Thus many people were killed falling a victim to the displeasure of the king. One day a wise man entered the court accepting the challenge of the king. He started telling his unending story. There was a spacious godown, the wise man started. This godown occupied a big area in the town. The godown was so nicely built that not a single hole was found in the building. Then the whole godown was filled with grains. It so happened that after a period of time a small hole appeared in the wall of the godown. The hole was so small that only one small ant could enter the godown at a time. The ant would enter the godown and pick up a grain and come out of that hole. When it needed the grain again, it would dash in to pick up a piece of grain and get out. The next day again the ant would enter and again it would go out after picking the grain. The wise man boringly repeated a single activity of an ant carrying a single piece of grain. The godown, which contained lots of lots of grains, could not be emptied by a single ant. As it appeared impossible to empty the godown, the possibility to bring the story to an end was very remote.
The king felt bored on hearing about an ant coming and going with a piece of grain. The king said to the wise man, "Tell me, what happened next?" The wise man said ''let all the grains of the godown be taken away by the ant''. '' It would take years and centuries to empty the godown by one ant'' the king retorted. ;Let it take years. I am not in a hurry. I can tell you what happened next only after the godown gets emptied of grain''. According to the wise man the ants are still busy picking the grains to this day. The godown is full of grains as the wise man of wisdom. The story has not come to an end yet.
