Reason And Science
(John Redford)

Publicidade
With Wit and Science John Redford has delivered to future generations one of the first English-language dramas. This fragment lies, as well as other texts bound to into one manuscript in the British Museum, London. The exact point of time of the origin of the drama is unknown. It is accepted that John Redford wrote it between 1531 and 1547. The years 1531 to 1534 are the most plausible, during which years he also was responsible as choir leader at St. Pauls Cathedral for the dramatic presentations of the choir. On how John Redfords text came to be performed, the sources leave likewise unanswered. In his drama the figure of Wit stands in the foreground. Wit means here not joke, but should be translated by the word Understanding. Wit has the desire to marry Science with the daughter of Reason and Experience. In the center stands the question about the way education is acquired. Under the direction of Instruction, Wit is to arm itself now, together with its helpers Confidence, Diligence and Eagerness, against Boredom. Wit demonstrates all instructions himself and enters rashly into a aggressive argument with Vice and Boredom. Wit dies in the battle, but is brought back to life by the figure Meaningful Spare Time. Wit has now noticeably changed, because he does not follow the advice of Reason anymore . He forgets his love of Science and picks up thus with Meaningful Spare Time. While Wit is dancing with it, Wit falls to the vices Idleness and Ignorance. As visible indication of his change, they take off Wit''s coat and disguise him as a donkey so that  Wit is regarded by his loved one as Ignorant and earns Mockery and Rejection as a result. Left by all and without any hope, he comes by means of a glass of Reason to the relentless self-assessment of his behavior and finds his way back to the right way. After he now with renewed energy can obey the directions of Instruction, he can now successfully combat Boredom, finally nothing anymore stands in the way of the marriage between Wit and Science. The play is interrupted occasionally by song insertions, which does not appear in the text. The drama offers an amazingly action-rich plot for an otherwise very abstract topic. The consideration that Understanding only wants to learn if the damage is already present seems more up-to-date ever than ever. Remarkable is the cross between a religious play and Renaissance comedy, which characterizes the piece. The use of figures of vice on the stage refers to the medieval tradition, while the course of the plot anticipates modern developments. Besides this piece of John Redford are his dramas, Marriage of Wit and Science (1569) and The Marriage of Wit and Wisdom (1570) with the central figure of Wit.
