 ?Artist Versus The Man?
While Aubrey jumps from one aspect of Thomas Hobbes?s life to another and has no particular focus, Vasari is much more focused and shows a better understanding of Donatellos?s work and his devotion to art. Aubrey displays a lot of details from Hobbes?s life including his childhood, his religion and his friends. Vasari doesn?t get into so much detail but rather presents Donatello?s life experiances that had to do with his commitment to art.    Aubrey is very descriptive and includes a lot of physical detail. He wants to  His biography takes form of notes. Aubrey inserts a lot of miselanious information including  everything from Hobbes?s background, his teachers, friends to what he wore but hardly mentioned anything about his works. For example: ? In cold weather he commonly wore a black velvet coat, lined with fur, if not, some other coat so lined.?Aubrey uses his personal observations to help formulate the person?s appearance. By citing details from Hobbes?s everyday life, Aubrey illustrates who the person really was. On the other hand Vasari shows deep interest in work of art. For instance : ? For Donatello made his figures in such a way that in the room where he worked they didn?t look half as well as they did as when they were put in their places.? He shows the importance of work. Vasari  thinks art should speak to you, therefore he mentioned that when Donatello?s figures were on the ground they didn?t have much of a value, but when the figures were put up they made quite an impression.   Aubrey?s style is very uncommon comparing to a typical biography and it?s shown in his disorganization. Aubrey?s Life of Thomas Hobbes begins in a classical way of essay writing  then changes to another type where he starts giving each paragraph a topic. The names of the topics are parts of the body or just random things. For example: ? Head. In his old age he was very bald yet within door, he used to study, and sit, bareheaded, and said he never took cold in his head, but that the greatest trouble was to keep off the flies from pitching on the baldness.?However Vasari?s way of writing is remarkably different. It is concise, well structured and also continuous. In other words easy to follow. In addition Aubrey?s content in not very chronological. He does observe Hobbes?s life, but then all of a sudden goes all the way back to his school days and therefore his style is a little disoriented.                                           Inspite of the fact that Vasari was very interested in work of art and has so much to say about his subject?s work, Aubrey attempts to reveal ? the man ? in the philosopher, they both seem to focus on specific details of their character?s lives. If Aubrey focused on Hobbes?s works, the philospher would be viewed for his genius rather than for his humanity. Therefore Aubrey focused on Hobbes?s peculiarity, rather than his kindness and friendliness. He seemed to observe and analyze Hobbes?s life under a magnifying glass, by describing Hobbes?s physical appearance, friends and teachers. While for Vasari all these extra details were unnecessary. He just concentrated on showing us a beauty of art and how important it is to him.
