Death In La Fenice
(Donna Leon)
Poisoned by cyanide in a cup of coffe, the famous orchestra director Helmut Wellauer dies in his dressing room at the mythical theatre of la Fenice, in Venice, during the interval of La Traviata. Inspector Guido Brunetti, the best known character of Donna Leon, is in charge of investigating the death and of coping with all the repercussions and consequences of a case which fixates all the eyes on the world on him, in addition to the pressure from his superiors. During the investigation Brunetti has to dig into the secrets of the musicians in Wellauer''s life, of German origin and with a past close to the Nazi regime. As hated as admired, there are not many who mourn for Helmut as a person, as he discovers that, far away from the musical genius, this was an inflexible and homofobic man. He had even threatened the main character of La Traviata to confess to her ex-husband a homosexual relationship, through which she would lose custody of her children. Ruling out suspects, Brunetti finds out that the genius was not so much anymore, he was getting deaf and was not capable of perceiving the chords well that he himself created with his direction. The answer to all the questions Brunetti will find in a sordid marital relationship, broken by a crime commited by the same Helmut Wellauer.
