Philosophy In The Boudoir
(Marquis de Sade)
Madame de Saint-Ange is anything but saintly. She is beautiful respected woman of high society, in public, and a self indulgent depraved libertine in private. In her twelve years of marriage she has had over twelve thousand lovers with her claim to fame being the twenty-four hour period in which she had intercourse "from front to back," over ninety times. Her only goal is to participate in debaucherous acts that will result in most pleasure possible. The Madame has a plan to exploit a beautiful virgin maiden with the end result being the childs indoctrination into the world of libertinage. She is joined in her efforts by Dolmance a misogynistic sodomite who is utterly repelled by women, and Madame de Saint-Ange''s younger brother "the Chevalier," with whom she regularly fornicates. Young Eugenie''s "lessons," are composed of a lecture on philosophy, courtesy of Dolmance followed by visual example. Dolmance breaks from his preference of men only, in order to illustrate with Madame de Saint-Ange the principles of his teachings. Early on the student displays an ardent desire to learn about libertinage, and before long is activiely participating. Eugenie is subsequently sodomized by Dolmance, deflowered by Chevalier and transformed into a creature even more depraved than her teachers. This pornographic novel is very representative of activites that the author himself actively participated in and that landed him in prison first at Vincennes and then at the Bastille in 1777. Sade published philosophy in the Budoir along with most of his work under strict anonymity. His most famous novel would likely be Justine, for which he was locked up in an insane asylum where he died at age seventy-four.
