(Melike Asli Sahinsoy)

"The Lost Mariners", or originally "Les Marins Perdus", is a French film made in 2002. Based on the popular novel by Jean-Claude Izzo, the film is dominated by a fully melancholic atmosphere. It focuses on 3 sailors, who have been lost between the life at sea and land.

The relation established between the sea and land in the film actually symbolizes the relation between a woman and man. A ship cast anchor off the coast of Beirut due to the economic problems of her owner, and three last remaining crew members: the Lebanese captain Abdul Aziz, the Greek second officer Diamantis and the Turkish sailor Nedim. The sailors have no entry permits, no rights and no money. Away from their families, all of them have very interesting stories, and what is more, the sea is almost more motionless than the land!..

The script of the film was jointly written by Claire Devers and Jean-Paul Fargean and directed by Claire Devers. Bernard Giraudeau, Miki Manojlovic, Audrey Tautou, and Marie Trintignant share the leading roles in the film. The film has French, English, Greek and Turkish versions.

The film was awarded the "Don Quichotte - Special Mention Award" at the 2003 Locarno International Film Festival, and nominated for the "Golden Leopard Award". The film should be seen to better understand the psychology of the sailors. "The Lost Mariners" was screened in Turkey at the Flying Broom Women''s Film Festival in 2004.
