Resumo de Curbing Examination Malpractice Through Counseling

            The issue of Examination malpractice has become another Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in the Education sector. This has continued to be a source of worry to the stakeholders of the sector, including Government, Parents, Institutions Administrators, among others. Although various therapeutic measures had been suggested and tested, it is unfortunate that the menace has defiled all the measures. Rather than subsiding, it has continued to spread like ?harmathan fire? in the sector.
            Amidst the continued search for a definite measure that can stand the test of time, the study investigated the effectiveness of counseling intervention in curbing the issue in selected Lagos State secondary schools, particularly the use of Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) of Albert Ellis and Robinson?s SQ3R study habit technique. Two hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. Pre-test and post-test control group design was adopted.
            All the secondary schools students in Lagos mainland Education District of Lagos State constituted the population on which the study was based. Sample consisted of 300 students including 150 male and 150 female, which were selected through random sampling technique.
            Subjects were treated to remedial guidance and group counseling talks on how to study effectively, prepare for examination and the evils in cheating during examination.
            Data collected were analysed with the use of t-test at 0.05 level of significance.
It was revealed in the study that:
( i)Counseling intervention had a significant effect on the attitudes of male and female subjects towards examination malpractice:
(ii)There is significant difference between the attitudes of experimental subjects before and after the treatment towards examination malpractices
Based on the findings, recommendations were made towards the curbing of examination malpractices in the education sector, which include:
-The need for teachers, school administrators and government to encourage groups counseling programmes such as talks and workship for students, exposure of parents, Guardians, teachers and the public to seminars which can change their illogical thoughts and ideas about their achieve mentioned their children, regular meetings of parents and Teachers Association (PTA) towards the discouragement of the menace.
-Adoption of Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) and Robinson?s Q3R technique on preparup students for success on examinations by the school Counsellors.
