Cost Reduction Strategies At Secondary Educational Institutions Settings
(Akindele Matthew Ige)
One avenue through which Education can be propagated is the educational institution, whether at primary, secondary and tertiary level. Out of these levels, the secondary level occupies a unique position being the bridge between the primary and tertiary levels. Over the years, secondary educational institutions? Administrators in Nigeria have been facing the challenges of meeting the huge financial and facilities outlay in the administration of their respective institutions, a situation that can be traced to the poor budgetary allocation to the education sector on which their funding depends. The situation thus calls for a rational approach in the utilization of the available financial, human and material resources to achieve the stated and desired goals. The secondary schools? Administrators therefore have to devise means of utilizing the limited resources from government to achieve their goals. One of the ways whereby this can be achieved is through cost-saving strategies. This paper had therefore tried to highlight the various measures that can be adopted to reduce cost in secondary schools. A very brief introduction forms the first part of the paper, which is followed by the meaning and analysis of the concept of educational cost, constituting the nucleus of the topic. The various factors influencing institutional cost, being an offshoot of educational cost, followed this while the various strategies for reducing cost, which forms the nucleus of the paper followed. Among these strategies are: the teaming up with other neighbouring schools for the purchase of food items and stationeries, which can help in reducing transportation/carriage cost; computerisation of records, which can help in reducing the number of staff and salaries to be paid to them; increase in class size; improvisation of science equipment, which can help in reducing cost of science equipment; recruitment of teachers with less qualification. This was followed by the summary and the conclusion of the paper. Making Policies that would favour the adoption of the various suggested measures, particularly those bordering on teachers and students recruitment by government, are recommended. .
