In this text of 1961, Goffman analyzes the world of the total institutions, be them of clinical carácter, prisional or conventual. The author is centered, essentially, in the carácter of closing of these institutions, growing up, in that way, a barrier among interior and external. Inside the institutions they not just inhabit the head teams, but, also interned them, the prisoners, the ones that opt for a lonely life. In the passage of a life in the exterior for a life of space and social confinement, the individual goes by modification processes. In any of the chaos, be the subject''s forced institucionalização or be for his/her initiative, a process of mortification of the begins me initial of the subject, for the adaptation concessions to the new institutional rules. The individual is played among his/her real personality and the personality that it is produced for itself, not only for the head team as for the whole society. Goffman still analyzes the subject of the time lived inside the institution, namely the organization of the time of those interned or prisoners, according to actividades programmed millimetrically, whose function, for besides disciplining the subjects, it inhibits them in terms of personal development.In this book Erving Goffman it produces a critical speech on the world of the interned, of the head team, of the institutional objectivos, inter-relate-them and, referring the several phases of life of the institutionalized subject. This was a text produced starting from a field work taken to cable by the author, in a psychiatric institution.
