What is in a name? It is a question posed by a character in a Shakespearean play. His assertion is that a rose is as beautiful and sweet for its transporting fragrance if it were called by any other name. In my humble view this is the opinion of a person on whom success has attended on his efforts to attain a goal without his really meriting it. I hold the view that, while luck may sometimes also play a part, success of a person in reaching his goal mostly hinges on solid effort aided by a little inspiration. I also believe that the name of the aspirant to success is also relevant to a great degree to the issue. It should have a meaning compatible with the desired goal, namely victory. You cannot make a man with a hideous visage handsome by bestowing on him the name ?Alagiamanavalan? . Take for instance the name Sampat . The name denotes lasting prosperity. In my long life, I have had opportunities to know closely a score of people bearing that name and by extraordinary coincidence, all of them are solid symbols of what prosperity means. Maybe I have a special vision that, by automatic filtering, projects the best to me. There was a case in the early years of my Government service where my English boss was forced to put on record that one Mr. Wylie was also wily. I have been lucky in that all Vijayaraghavans I know are victorious: all kokilas nightinglkes.
