101 Poems Of Consternation
(Catrina Lawrence)
In ?101 Poems of Consternation'' Catrina Lawrence sets out her stall early and then makes a bold agenda. The result is not so much a seamless fusion of poetry and graphic horror; much rather the brutal catgut stitching of Frankenstein''s monster. Her collection of poems range from the subtle violence of ?The Burning'' ("They tied me to a cross, wearing nothing but my sins") to the shock-fest of ?The Body Beneath'' ("Feel the suffocation as the dirt fills above; Feel the maggots burying their way into your flesh"). As the reader works through the book a pervading sense of unease is the only thing keeping company. When it comes to delivery this is very much James Herbert as opposed to Stephen King. Poetry purists may find some of the couplets trite or rudimentary but Lawrence has made sure there is plenty here to entice stalwart horror fans who, traditionally, would not entertain reading prose in any shape or form. And that has to be a good thing.
