A Solstice Tree For Jenny
(Karen I. Shragg)

Publicidade
Finally, a holiday season book for non-religious families! Jenny''s parents don''t believe in celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, or any of the other religious holidays centered around the winter season. Being archeologists, they are usually in some remote desert during this season, so Jenny hasn''t been around to see all the lights and decorations at her friends and neighbors homes. This year they are at home and Jenny wonders why they can''t decorate their home as well. This book sensitively deals with the concept of other people''s gods, religious traditions and beliefs, at the same time that it affirms that you can live a good life and be a good person because you choose to, and not because your religion tells you that you must. Choice is a radical idea for some, and this book will surely offend those who still believe that their religion is the one true religion and all other ways of thinking are wrong. On the other hand, it will offer a glimpse of enlightenment and the beginnings of self responsibility to the many children lucky enough to read it. And it offers some wonderful holiday alternatives that my family is eager to turn into their own traditions.
