The Inheritance of Loss - Winner of the Man Booker Price-2006

Inheritance of loss makes for simple and lucid reading of a very complex and delicate issues in the society (Indian). It captures the feelings , hopes and trials by immigrant workers in foreign lands, and the air of pride the parents of immigrants feel back at home. In this context Desai has touched the lives of workers like cook to reporters and the war the parents have with each other just to show oneself above the other praising a ''Firangi/foreign'' nation.

The novel comes to the point in which the different lives portrayed- The Judge , Sai his granddaughter, the cook, the neighbours all try to find meaning to their life and reach a mark, but end outt loosing and find themselves merely like the after effect of wars, the victims of civil wars. All of which drastically pull in and destroy the common Man''s life to finally be the inheritor of loss. To really understand imbibe the novel takes time and each para has subtle hints on varied topics such as racism, snobbery, submissiveness of Indians to rule by the Brits and reverence for the white skin, gender issue, issue of false pirde and status, issue of identity crisis and fight for territorial rights, etc.

Spicing up the novel are tones of sarcasm, satire, humour that dig in and expose small human weaknesses, like digging into other people''s business, false feeling of importance etc. There is also a flow between past and present in the novel that helps to undetsand the differnce of the good old days from the present, in the Cook''s version of the past glory.

In short it is a story that describes the false hopes of immigrants, the ingrained belief of luxury in a foreign land, the racism the  exploitation of humans from the third world for cheap labour and finally the home coming and feeling of calmness experienced by immigrant worker, who lost all but was happy to be back home. The story frames the lives of the Judge and shows a life lived in pomposity without ever really owning an ''identity'' during the British rule. Sai''s life reflects the remnant influence of colonialism through the convent education.A girl who is pinched off love by the untimely death of her parents, who even when alive couldn''t care for her enough. A lonely soul looking for love is her picture.

Gyan the Nepali youth is between adolescence and adulthood. The fights of the Nepalis for their right has been depicted with humour and the attrocities and injustice under the cause exposed.

The  glimpse of the Judge''s wife shows a life that had been trampled on to help make the identity for a nother. A life that finally made an attempt and protest and was brutally extinguished from the earth.

In all the novel reflects simplicity and flow, only some dates of events and the relating to modern times and emergence of laptops as back as 1980s,the relating of Rajiv Gandhis death all sem to contradict a bit.  But the last word- Good Novel!
