Armin Minderhout lives with his girlfriend Ellen and his thirteen year old son Bo in Amsterdam. He works as an editor at a scientific publisher. Ellen and he both want another child, but it does not happen. Armin gets himself tested and finds out that he has always been infertile. This has a big impact for him; it means he can not be the biological father of Bo. Bo?s mother, Monika, has been dead for some years, so he can not find out who Bo?s real father is. Armin goes back to Monika?s past. He makes a list of potential fathers of Bo. He starts with Monika?s ex-boyfriend, Robert Hubeek. Hij makes an appointment to meet him. They have never liked each other much, but it becomes clear that Robert does not even know that Monika is dead. He does not enlighten him.
The next candidate is the doctor who brought Monika to the hospital just before she died. When Armin asks him whether he is Bo?s father, the doctor reacts quite shocked. Armin crosses him out from his list. The only one remaining is Niko Neerinckx, who worked with Monica at the travel agency. Monika had told him in the past that Niko had made some marriages fall apart, because he fell for married women. Armin does not dare to confront Niko, because he is afraid that Nico might want the custody of Bo. He visits Niko?s wife instead. He represents himself as Erik Aldenbos, a previous inhabitant of the Neerinckx house, who hid letters in the attic. He meets Niko?s wife a couple of times. He finds out that her oldest son is also called Bo and that they have a picture of Monika in their photo album. Everything seems to point to Niko. In the meantime Armin keeps thinking about the time he had with Monika and about her sickness. Armin?s father also dies in the meantime. This is all so difficult, that he decides to take a time out. He goes on vacation with Bo to Ameland. They have a good time, but when Bo falls in love with a girl, everything goes wrong.
Bo and Armin are eating at a café, where the girl is also present and at the end Bo leaves with her and Armin is left behind alone.
The next morning Armin wakes up with a big hangover. He goes to see where Bo is and finds him in bed together with the girl. When they were gone, Armin went back to bed and only woke up from some loud shouting. He is lying in his own vomit and Bo is shouting at him. During the ensuing discussion he tells Bo that he is not his father. Bo is furious and shocked. Armin is sorry for saying this, but is also relieved.
When Armin gets home, he starts cleaning up his fathers? stuff. Under his parents? bed he finds a small case. In there is a letter from Monika in care of his father. The only thing the letter says is: I am pregnant. M.?. Armin knows this can only have one meaning and goes home in shock to find Ellen and Bo there, who have both been crying. On the table is an envelope which says ?For Bo?. It is in the handwriting of Monika. All these years Ellen had kept the letter for Bo in which was written who his biological father was. She had known all this time.
