Ben, a rich businessman of Getz International, goes in search of his friend, whom he has not seen for 20 years. He finds him in China, where he also has to do some business. In the meantime he fires his nephew for preaching during work. Once in China he is very surprised to find that Quan, his friend, is very poor. They studied together and he had expected Quan to be rich, just like himself. Quan and his family were very pleased with the presents he had brought for them. Amongst those presents is also a Bible, but Quan puts it away quite quickly. Quan lives in a small, old house together with his wife Ming and his small son Shen.
After staying for a couple of days with Quan, Ben finds out why Quan is so poor. He believes in God and that is forbidden in China. Quan can be easily arrested, so he must be careful in everything he says or does. Should he be arrested, he would be put in jail and tortured until he would admit that Jesus does not exist. They already suspect that Quan is a Christian, so he is being shunned. Ben can not believe that Quan is willing to go through all this for his belief. He would give his life for it, and that is something that Ben would never do!
Ben stays for quite a long time and sometimes also goes to the house church. But then Quan is arrested and has to go to prison, just like his deceased father and granddad.
Ben wants to do anything he can to get Quan free and in that way he also gets more connected to God. He succeeds in getting access to Quan by giving money to the prison guard after which he is allowed to enter. He learns a lot about God from Quan. Ben would have given up after the first setback, but Quan keeps believing en his faith only increases! Ben attends a meeting of Christians. It was said that there would be an American priest, but when Ben arrives there is no priest there. They want him to give the sermon! At first he does not want to, but then he gives in. He reads from the book of John, thereby getting more involved in thinking about faith.
In the meantime things get worse for Quan. He gets sick, but continues with his work in the prison. Even in prison he tells the other prisoners about God and some of them are converted. Ben has also accepted his own faith in the meantime, which Quan finds fantastic. Quan is tortured to get him to renounce his faith, but he refuses and dies in the end. Ben, Ming and Shen are full of grief. Ben goes back home, but will never forget this experience. He even asks his nephew to come back to work for him and attends church for the first time in America. There he meets his ex-wife and daughter and arranges a meeting to tell them everything about his experiences in China.
