The Spyglass
(RICHARD PAUL EVANS)

Publicidade
Faith is the foundation of master storyteller Richard Paul Evans'' inspiring
new fable, The Spyglass, the second book in his Virtues Collection for
children. The first book, The Christmas Candle, a story of charity, was
published in 1998. The Tower,
a story of humility, is scheduled for later this year.

In The Spyglass, a king
is the ruler of a dark, depressing kingdom inhabited by an impoverished people. The people of the kingdom were not just poor by way of things, but they
were poor of spirit -- for there was not much joy in the village . . . worst of
all, the people had forgotten why their kingdom was once great. The
magnificent buildings had fallen into disrepair, crops had failed and
oftentimes the villagers went to bed hungry.

The king was not much better
off. His cold castle and limited means provided little in the way of comfort,
and he was much too embarrassed to entertain the kings of other lands.

One night a traveler knocks on the door of the castle and requests food and
a night''s lodging in the crumbling palace. In return for his hospitality, the
old man shows the monarch his kingdom through the lens of an enchanted
spyglass. The king sees his kingdom not as it is, but as it could be, restored
to its former greatness.

You have seen what might be, the old man says. Now go and
make it so. After two harvests I will return for my spyglass.

The king takes the magical device and visits all the people in his kingdom,
asking each one to look through the glass. Inspired by the wonder and hope of
the visions they see, his subjects work alongside the king to restore the lost
glory of their land.

That year brings a plentiful harvest and everyone prospers. After the second
harvest, the old man returns to reclaim the spyglass, but the king is afraid to
let the spyglass go. He tries to buy it from the old man who informs him he no
longer needs the device. It was only Faith that you and your people
lacked . . . the eyes of faith see without bounds or limits.

Brought to life by the rich, oil paintings of Jonathan Linton, The Spyglass motivates readers of
all ages to see the world from a different point of view and restore the
treasure of faith to its rightful place in our hearts.
