Murder Begins At Home
(Delano Ames)
I have been looking through my parents old book case again and found another good read that hasnt been read since The British Sailors Society put it out of circulation. Published in 1949 and set in America it transports you into the genre of the detective novel with a real nineteen fifties feel about it. Jane and Dagobert Brown are travelling across the USA avoiding post war austerity back in England and the offer from his aunt of regular mind numbing employment in Detroit and have got as far as New Mexico in their unreliable car, when he persuades Jane to visit a rich and glamorous war time collegue Miranda Ross who has since married and lives on a huge ranch a few hours drive from El Paso. At first they dont get invited to stay when they ring from the local diner, but then the web weaving Miranda changes her mind and extends the red carpet . Also staying at the ranch are a successful song writer and his wife, Mirandas sister and her admirer, their father, Mirandas husband and his half brother and his illegitimate child by a Mexican girl. So when Miranda is found murdered the next morning before they have even had time to thank her for the enchiladas she cooked them, Jane and Dagobert feel they must solve the mystery of who did it to absolve everyone else of suspicion, including themselves as no one is allowed to leave and there is a murderer on the loose. The mystery weaves it''s way on but I liked it most for the way it took you so well into another era. You could almost feel that you were out there in the Casa Grande mountains doing the dangerous horse ride yourself. So I should say it is well worth looking through forgotten books for the experience they show you and reading them.
