Vikram Chandra, Love and Longing in Bombay, Little, Brown and Company, New York, 1997, 268 pages. This book is a a collection of five short stories that take place in Bombay. They are entitled Dharma, Shakti, Kama, Artha, and Shanti. They all show different aspects of life in Bombay. All the stories are told in a bar by Subramaniam, an old retired man to his friends or whoever is listening. The first story, Dharma, is about a haunted house that noone will buy and how the original owner goes back there to confront his own ghost wherein is the tale of him having lost a leg and his twin brother. Shakti is about Bombay social life, a beautiful woman, and marriage. Kama is about a husband and wife who are murdered, and the detective''s relentless search for the murderer. The detective reveals much of his own life in his search such as his passionate affair and love for his estranged wife. The real murderer is discovered but another has been accused and died.
