What''s That? A Tale Of Cholesterol
(Lisa Price Stevens)

Publicidade
This is not a book a child will beg you to read to him or her over and over again, but it is equally important that a kid''s book appeal to the parent or grandparent reader and here Lisa Price''s little story offers some real dividends: 1. this lesson about eating well in a country of childhood obesity is long overdue, 2. What''s That? shows genuine respect for the Black experience of the past (including the origin of soul food), and 3. I doubt a child would show this to a young sibling or friend, but he or she might just raise the question of healthy choices with an adult family member (like the grandpa in the story) who is prone to unhealthy food choices. The drawings by Arthur Simmons, which do add considerable warmth and atmosphere, tend to illustrate the words rather than advance the story. And those words, supposedly by the six or seven year old narrator, at times seem rather adult and pedantic. But I did learn about "fatback" and pigs feet; and I can tell you, it''s because of the chart of realistic alternative choices at the end of the book that I am eating a graham cracker as I write this instead of a baked cookie. In an aside to parents, Dr Lisa tells us, "Eating habits are formed very early in life. Why not involve the entire family in healthy eating?" I''d call What''s That? a sugar-free children''s book. It gets the point across in a palatable way without any unnecessary sweetening. If health education is like a vaccination that given early enough and in the right doses prevents disease, What''s That? is a great tool for a healthier tomorrow. And my grandkids enjoyed my reading it to them too.
