The Hunt For Red October
(Tom Clancy)

Publicidade
To anyone who has seen the movie, reading this book will even be more exciting. The world?s newest and most advanced submarine built by the Russians , the Red October is heading to the US to defect. His superiors did not learn about it until it was too late. It?s skipper, Marko Ramius designed it and it is almost undetectable even to the other Russian submarines. It was supposed to participate in a training exercise but the other Russian vessels lost track of it. They did not know what it was up to and their orders were to find and destroy it before the Americans get hold of it. But they could not find her. Marko Ramius mentored most of the submarine officers and he knew all the tricks to elude them. All the naval activities aroused the suspicion of the Americans because they were running around in the Atlantic Ocean, their territory. They called in a specialist, Jack Ryan to analyse the motives of the Russians. Ryan is a historical novelist who now and then does some work for the CIA. He guessed it right that the Red October plans to defect. The Yanks even borrowed the ?Invincible? from the Brits because most of their carriers are out of action because of repairs or too far away to be recalled. They trailed the Russians and intimidated them and had some casualties. One of their jets was shot down. They could not retaliate. The Russians now just ignored them and proceeded to look for their missing sub. One genius sonar man discovered an unusual sound and it was the Red October. They were finally able to catch up with it and Ryan and a British officer who spoke Russian boarded it to guide it to port. Actually Ramius sabotage the submarine to make it look like some mishap to force them to land somewhere. The American navy took out the serial number and put it into another wreckage to fool the Russians that the Red October sank. They took the crew with the exclusion of Ramius and some of his trusted officers to shore and repatriated them to their homeland. They were asked if they wanted to defect but they declined and were sent home. They later found out that it would have been better if they defected as they were subjected to harassment as to what has happened to their submarine The Russian fleet proceeded to head home but they left a few to look around in case they discover something. The skipper of one Russian sub who served under Ramius later sensed and recognise the distinctive sound of the Red October being escorted and it fired on it without awaiting authorisation from his superiors as otherwise he would lose track of it. The Red October was hit a but it did not sink. The American escorts could not fire back because of strict orders only to defend themselves if fired upon. Ramius trained the skipper of the Russian submarine so he knew how to outsmart him. As the Alfa fired again and this time it was a torpedo with a safety device, they were able to evade it. With the cunning of Ramius and the approval of Skipper Mancuso, an American skipper to help him navigate it safely to American territory they decided to meet the Alfa head on and they collided and with Red October?s massive size it upturned and sank the Russian submarine. Mancuso guided it to port well concealed and met by two American officers. The Russians would never know the Yanks have outsmarted them.
