Carnival Of Consumerism (the Week Dt Apr 8, 07)

Abstract: On an article by Santosh Desai ?A Carnival of Consumerism?

The unglamourized deplorable exit from the World Cup has evicted a diversity of responses from a nation for whom cricket talk is anything from reverence to spicy tittle-tattle. The new generation that is characterized by emphatic and often erratic opinions has finally poured out its revulsion.

The sundry cricket aficionado is most often an armchair enthusiast who watches the game more with the intention of channelising blame and shame rather than with the generous spirit of a sportsman. Venom veiled in the robe of patriotism is directed towards the players and a veteran of the sport is often the target of such ire. As the author rightly says, the Indian fan of a middling mindset and common mentality believes that Sachin must bat forever as if he is sixteen.

Are we as a nation just as pre occupied with other sports such as soccer, golf and tennis? Haven?t we, a cricket crazy country idolized the icons wielding the willow to the extent that a slight deviation in performance of the team can cause unhealthy tremors within an otherwise cool psyche? The game is not visualized as a sport anymore. It has instead provided an unhealthy arena for the battleground of the idiot box-cricketers and the brand building exercise of business organizations.
