Jokke is a 12 year old boy who falls in love with a girl named Takkie. He rides his bike by her house every day en finally they meet each other. They arrange to meet each other in the park, where they tell each other they are in love. Takkie is the daughter of a physician and his second wife. Her father already has two grown up daughters with his now deceased first wife.
At the same time the life of two hoednas (a type of beaver) is described on the land of the vacation villa of Takkies family.  They were released there by Takkies grandfather. Hij had brought them over from Afrika, but realised in time that they would be dangerous to his daughters life (Takkies mother). Now they live in a territory where they do not really belong. The male Lussel and the female Twenna do not know very well how to live in this cold country.
Jokke rents a canoe and takes Takkie along. He is nervous and tells a stupid story that does not go down well. When he starts telling about the dangers of catfishes everything ends well. Jokke and Takkie are both overwhelmed by the harmony which they reach together and are moved by the awareness of their love. When Takkie lives in the villa of her grandfather during her vacation, she asks Jokke to come by. Her parents do not agree to this and there is a row. When later her parents are once again drunk, they approve of the invitation. In between is told how the hoednas lived in their natural environment. It seems that they busied themselves with the excavation of pelicans, when these took away their fish. After their work they played with there erogenous zones, which looked like making love. Once in a while partial memories come back and the hoednas react instinctively.
Jokke is going with a canoe to the vacation home of Takkies family. For that he has to row upstream and he turns over. He gets the canoe to the side and goes into the water to get his towel and wallet. The canoe drifts away and Jokke gets exhausted. He climbs on the side and walks to the vacation home. The hoednas are playing their love game and during this game they see Jokke on their grounds. Because of his pink skin Lussel thinks he has to do with a pelican. He follows his instinct and bites through Jokkes carotid artery. Jokke bleeds to death. Takkie waits in vain for him and feels that an unfortunate fate has fallen his way.
In the last chapter, The Cleaning, is told that the house has been bombed. Twenna and Lussel are gone and nothing was ever heard of Jokke. The ground has been made ready for building with bulldozers.
