The Golden Egg
(Tim Krabbe)

1. Rex Hofman and Saskia Ehlvest were on their way to their holiday home by the Mediteranean Sea. During the journey they had some words. Rex stopped by a tankstation to get fuel. They took some rest, played a little ball and buried two coins under a pole. Saskia got something to drink, after which she would drive. Rex made a picture. Three years ago, during their first vacation the fuel tank became empty and Saskia had to wait for three hours in the car. The oppression of the dark little car had completely upset her, it reminded her of her nightmare of the golden egg. When she was still little, she once dreamed that she was locked up in a golden egg which flew through space. Everything was black, there were not even stars, she would stay there forever and she could not die. There was only one hope. There was one other golden egg flying through space and if they crashed into each other they would both be destroyed and all would be over. But space was so big!. Saskia did not return with her drink. Rex asked everyone whether they had seen his girlfriend. He called the hotel and the police, but Saskia was gone and stayed gone and nobody knew where she was.
2. Eight years later, during a vacation in Marina di Camerota (Italy) Rex asks Lieneke to marry him. The outcome of a little badminton game with two Frenchmen made him decide that. But Saskia was looking on from the side line. Rex truly wanted to tell Lieneke what he thought about Saskia: If she came back I would stay with you, but if I could go back to that tankstation I would do that. During the night Lieneke discovers that Rex had nightmares about the golden egg.
3. In 1950 Raymond Lemorne was sixteen years old. He asked himself what would happen if he jumped from a building. The idea of jumping came up: how would he know if he had the possibility to jump other than to make the jump? So he jumped and stayed six weeks in hospital. Twenty-one years later something similar happened to him again. By then he was a teacher in Chemistry, was married and had two daughters. One day he saved a child from drowning. But would he now also be able to commit a crime? By getting this thought he became committed to take a first step. He constructed a jar of chloroform and kept the jar in the attic of his remote vacation home. In order to continue unhindered with the preparations for the crime, he told his family that he would be refitting the little house. He made sure that nobody would suspect him if he would bring his victim to his house. It would be best if the victim would be a foreign woman. He bought an old mattress and a revolver. He wanted to lure his victim into his car and after many preparations and failed experiments he found the best way: at a tank station by the Autoroute he would, with one arm in a sling, ask a woman to help him connect his trailer wagon. That went wrong a couple of times, because no one wanted to get into the car to get to the end of the parking place. In the meantime Lemorne also killed two campers who stood on his little patch of grass. But one time he got lucky. A Dutch girl saw him play with his key ring which had a big letter R attached. She asked him for such a key ring and he said he was a representative and that he had a whole lot in his car. She went with him: he drugged her en kidnapped her.
4. Eight years later (but after the vacation in Italy) Rex started a big investigation. He put large ads in which he asked anyone who at one time might have seen Saskia, to write to him. Under the window of his flat in Buitenveldert a sad Sandra had written Rex, I like you on his car. Lieneke called; after the sad returntrip from Italy they had seen each other only once. There were several letters from France, but not one which was conclusive about Saskia''s strange disappearance. On the morning of the fifth day a French man introduced himself to Rex as Raymond Lemorne. Rex recognized him as the man with an arm in aling, which he had seen eight years earlier at the tankstation. Lemorne wanted to tell him exactly what had happened, but only in one way: Rex would have to go through it all himself. Rex knew that he would die but he accepted anyway. They drove to the tank station. In the meantime Rex ate from the lunch pack that Lemorne had prepared. At the tank station Rex had to drink coffee with a sleepingdraught. Then Lemorne told him what had happened. When Rex awoke, he was burried in a coffin.
5. Lieneke was looking for Rex, but he went away and never came back. No one heard anything about Saskia and Rex.
