How Al-Anon Works for Families and Friends of Alcholics is a truly helpful book. Al-Anon was begun by the wife of Bill W., the alcoholic who initiated ALCOHOLIC ANONYMOUS (AA). After Bill became sober and began to help hundreds of alcoholics to stop drinking and there were so many alcoholics in her home plus Bill spent more time with them. She realized that her feelings, attitudes, actions were not positive as she wanted them to be, therefore she began to use The Serenity Prayer and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions that AA was using to help alcoholics stop drinking by becoming more spiritual, not religious, as the way to find peace and stop drinking one day at a time.
People who love or live with an alcoholic develop certain negative behaviors that actually causes their alcoholic to continue drinking. AND, THEIR FOCUS ON THE ALCOHOLIC CREATIVES NEGATIVE THOUGHTS AND BEHAVIORS THAT ARE DESTRUCTIVE TO THEMSELVES AND OTHERS. That is co-dependency and is what Al-anon helps indivuals to understand and remove from themselves. Practicing the Twelve Steps, attending meetings and reading Al-Anon books and reading materials LEAD TO THE ACTIONS AND FAITH (in God as You understand God), that lead to healing oneself.
Al-Anon has regular meetings in thousands of towns and cities across the world, and, for people who have no Al-Anon meetings in their town or area, there is a special opportunity for Al-Anon to help them also.
