Monstrous Regiment
(Terry Pratchett)

Publicidade
Reading the Disc World Series, penned by welled loved British author Terry Pratchett, is something like hanging out with a circle of good friends. The are interesting, lively, comfortable and full of inside jokes. That is not to say that Pratchett leaves newcomers standing awkwardly in the doorway waiting to be asked in. His novels are both unique and charming much like the heroin of Monstrous Regiment. It seems that modern authors fail to write believable women they are all as weak spined as jellyfish or so prickaly that you actually end up disliking them. Many male authors can manage a believable female character in minor roll but Pratchett takes women out of the wings in this novel and brings them to life. Unlike other go-getter women who come off all too often as stuck up and self-promoting, these women are truly likeable and their motives are universal. Once again comedy achieves where romance and drama fall short. The novel fallows a young woman named Polly, who leaves her home hoping to bring home her much loved, but dim-witted brother. Polly enters the army and discovers that she is not the only woman in men''s clothing. With out revealing too many details it is safe to say that everything works out in a most demented and delightful way. A wonderful gender bending read that provides the perfect introduction to Disc World, Monstrous Regiment is a sure thing for anyone who enjoys comedy, irony and men in drag.  While being laugh our loud funny through most of the book, Pratchett manages to drive home the themes of loss, honor and civic duty that fuel wars and warriors. He trains his regiment of women into fine soldiers and leave you cheering in the wake. This book is so enjoyable
