We all know that after giving a break to the working of our mind, we are able to think better, & the solution strikes us. This is due to mental relaxation. What, if we can control our mind & keep it relaxed throughout. Well, it is possible through the process of Meditation. The potential of mind is infinite, & it is up to us to utilize it. The reaction of different persons to the same incident, is very much different. Meditation helps us in reducing the levels of our stresses of life, & making our reactions controlled & positive, & not violent or aggressive. stress may be due to personal or environmental reasons, but its effect may vary from person to person, & also from time to time. In twelve Chapters contained in three sections, this book covers its various aspects, & is based on author's personal experiences, & a number of examples. In short, this book covers the concepts, methods & benefits of meditation. The general format of each of the Chapters is that, there is an opening quotation, then reading material, & in the end, its brief summary & the highlights. In section one, the author covers what & why of meditation, which is basically a discipline of voluntary silence. The author provides, seven tips or suggestions, which should be integrated in our regular practice of meditation for adequate progress. Meditation primarily consists of sitting comfortably alone in a quiet environment, & mentally focusing on say, a mantra, along with a positive attitude of mind, for about 15 to 20 minutes, each in the morning & evening, on a light stomach. This should be done with closed eyes, always keeping focus on the mantra. Initially time may be kept by a stop watch, but later we can adjust to the time ourselves. After release of the focus from the mantra, eyes are opened, & we become aware of the surroundings.
In section two, the author provides details of four different methods of meditation, viz. concentrating on breathing; music; thoughts; & mantra. In the first one, the focus is made on our breathing, which consists of four stages, i.e. inhalation, inner retention, exhalation & outer retention. Slowly this breathing will become rhythmic, & also give positive effect on our mental health. The other methods are similar, except the object on which we have to focus. We may thus come to a stage, when our interactions with others are, absolutely in a calm & cool manner. To make the progress fast, the author has given three power tools, viz. keeping a reminder, selecting an environment & exercising visualization. Basically meditation amounts to our focusing mentally, in a quiet environment. In another section, the author has discussed about the stress factor & the various benefits which we can get from meditation, for our physical health, mental health, & environmental & spiritual levels. Stress is a part of our life, but we all must learn to manage it, to escape from its effects. Our health becomes better, due to the relaxation of our mind, & the changed pattern of breathing. Better health helps us, in facing the bad effects of stress in future, & it reduces the rate of the process of aging. In respect of our mental health, it helps us in reducing the level of anxiety, changing unhealthy habits, overcoming negative attitudes of others, enhancing self-esteem etc. It helps us in our developing such an attitude, that we do not identify ourselves with the bad behaviour of others. Meditation helps us in changing our negative emotions to positive, thus reducing the levels of stress. This can be done through these techniques, viz. witnessing & visualization. In the field of spiritualism also, there are five benefits, which have been listed in the book.
This abstract writer himself has been practicing meditation (using the technique of focusing on a mantra) for several decades, with good results, & would advise to go in for it, without any hesitation whatsoever. Of course, for better results it must be done regularly. We should not wait for our stresses to create problems for our health, but we should take timely actions in this regard. With meditation we can reduce our intake of medication. An informative, inspiring & beneficial book for persons from all walks of life, irrespective of their country, culture, religion, education, caste, gender or level. This book is useful for those who may or may not be under stress at present, but want to start meditation, & also for those who are already practitioners of meditation. The author rightly advocates introduction of this discipline, from the young adult age itself. A must read book.
