Knowing therituals that fairies have to go through to renew their magic powers Artemis andbutler set up a trap and lie in wait for their unsuspecting victim.CaptainHolly Short, the only female LEPrecon officer on the force is a fairy thatlikes to do things her own way (not by the rules). This gets her into trouble with hercommanding officer Commander Root, Head of LEPrecon. And for her troubles sheends up getting sent off to report on a run away troll in Italy who is heading straight for the mudpeople.Holly doesn?tjust report but takes affirmative action before everything gets out of hand. While she is busy using her skills and gadgetsshe realises that her own fairy powers have diminished by not taking the timeto recharge them. Commander Root is notimpressed and orders her to go to Ireland and recharge her magic powers by performingthe acorn ritual.Holly doesn?tget the chance to perform her little ritual.Instead she is unceremoniously thrust into a cloth bag and all hergadgets are taken away and disassembled.The crimewas abhorrent! It would mean thedestruction of the world as everyone knew it. Commander Root decides that he would lead therescue for his officer. Initially it doesn?tturn out very well following Captain Short?s tracking device ? he nearly getsblown up as a fishing boat is blasted into the sky.That wasjust to get LEPrecon?s attention. Afterother failed attempts, a whole rescue team being sent packing Commander Rootmeets with Artemis to find out what his demands are. Once he knows he decides to forget the rulebook and to play dirty. He had alreadycommanded Foaly, the head of everything mechanical, to freeze time on the Fowlestate and he decided that he would release a kleptomanic dwarf, Mulch Diggums,from jail to burrow into the house and find out how Artemis knew so much about fairyprocedure that he was able to always be one step ahead of the recon unit.Mulchburrowed his way through the ground and entered the house by the winecellar. He found what he was looking forin a secret safe by opening it with a hair from his beard. Another other unique feature of dwarfs wasthat they had extremely flatulent digestive systems. Using this to his advantage, but notrealising it, Mulch sent Butler flying into the air and into a wall, knockinghim out for a little while, with one of his derriere explosions. Once Mulchhad found the book and told Foaly he made his escape, literally, by faking hisown death through killing a rabbit and inserting his eye camera and monitorinto the eye of a rabbit to fool Commander Root. He was not going back to jail.Meanwhilewheels were turning within wheels and Captain Crudgeon, wanting a place on theruling committee snitches on Commander Root?s misdemeanours and blatant ruleflouting in running the rescue operation.Root loses his position of leadership and Crudgeon takes over by sendingin the killer troll. After much mayhemby the troll, Butler, Captain Short (who has by this time escaped from her cell herself) anddestruction the troll is sent packing having sustained horrific injuries.CommanderRoot is put back in charge and he thinks that there has been a breakthroughwhen some psychoanalysts notice a deliberate mistake in Artemis?s words thatallows him to give the command to send in the LEP ransom of one tonne of twentyfour carat gold ingots for the release of Captain Short. Fully expecting to retrieve it all back onceArtemis was dead after he had released the blue rinse (a most devastating bombthat would kill every living creature but wouldn?t leave a trace).The goldwas sent in and Captain Short came out with half of the gold. Artemis had had a slight pang of guilt aboutkeeping it all as Captain Short had helped in saving them from the troll andshe had also given Artemis another of his wishes. Then Commander Root allowed the blue rinse tobe detonated.But noteverything died due to Artemis?s genius he had worked out a way to overcome theinevitable. He made everyone drink somechampagne laced with just enough sleeping pills to make each of them fallasleep immediately. He had cheated thetime freeze and as such the blue rinse couldn?t harm him as he wasn?t stillawake when it was used.He had wonand earned himself £15million in gold that the fairies were not allowed to takeback.
