The Richest Man In Babylon
(George S Clason)
This timeless classic was first published way back in 1926s. I picked up the latest publication from a proper book shop, I guess its selling still strong for a book that is old, uses of old biblical style words and devoid of any glam that any hot selling book of today is expected to be. The thoughts of youth are bright lights that shine forth like meteors that oft make brilliant the sky, but the wisdom of age is like the fixed stars that shine so unchanged that the sailor may depend on them to steer his course (Page 13). It is those wisdoms that the parables in The Richest Man in Babylon tell us about ? the timeless wisdoms for acquiring wealth. The stories are told as lessons shared by Arkad, the richest man in Babylon, to some citizens of the city who desire to become wealthy. Some of the stories are told by the participants. These are stories of wasted opportunities, failures and successes. Arkad picks the gems of lessons from their experiences as well to illustrate his own teachings, which are summarised into 7 key gems. Or shall we call them strategies to get rich? 1. A part of what you earn is yours for keeping. Build your assets through savings. 2. Control your expenditure. 3. Multiply your assets, invest. 4. Protect your assets from loss 5. Invest in your own home 6. Create and ensure your assets give you cash inflows in future 7. Increase your ability to earn; perfect your trade. All these strategies are told in parables, each parable being differently interesting from the other: Dabasir who became reckless and became a slave and ultimately emancipated to become rich. The story of Rodan, who got a windfall of gold, resisted lending his gold to his sister?s husband under advice from a wise gold lender. The modern day professor who came across some excavated clay engravings of Babylon and became better upon reading those clay engravings, the lessons by Dabasir. The slave who got freedom and became Rich due to his hard work and enterprise?etc. Apart from the parables, the reader gets a glimpse of the culture of Babylon, its citizens, slaves and thriving economy - the history and grandeur of Babylon. The eons of time have crumbled to dust the proud walls of its temples, but the wisdom of Babylon endures... writes the last sentence of this wonderful book.
