The Wreckage
(Michael Crummey)

Publicidade
Canadian author, Micheal Crummey explores the power of love in Wreckage, where two young lovers? worlds crash with destiny and stormy times. The novel begins during WWII on the shores of Newfoundland, where Mercedes, a 16 year old Protestant falls for the likes of Wish Furey, a young Catholic sailing the coast showing Hollywood films in the local churches. The growing attraction between the two is obvious; so is the town?s disapproval. As the two persist in pursuing a relationship, religious prejudice turns to violence, and Wish escapes to St. John?s, and then to war.Willful Mercedes, or Sadie as most called her, fuelled by her love and her family?s resistance, chases Wish to St. John?s. When she discovers him gone to war, she settles with her memories and Wish?s stories, and resolves to wait for his return. But he doesn?t return. Wish?s unit has been captured and held in a Japanese POW camp where the prisoners suffer from hunger, and unimaginable atrocities. The announcement of Wish?s death arrives several months after the Japanese surrender. Sadie eventually marries Johnny Boustani, an American officer, and follows him to the United States, breaking away from Newfoundland and her previous life for good. It?s not until three years after her husband?s death and some 50 years since her departure that she returns to reconcile with the wreck she had left behind. But where she expects to find a ghost town of memories, she discovers some surprising news and a piece of her past still worth salvaging. Michael Crummey?s writing draws you into the Newfoundland culture, the realities of war, and the human condition. Wreckage reminds us that to invest in love is to risk losing it to loss and tragedy. The outcome can only be known by taking a leap of faith, following the course, and weathering the blows of destiny. Indeed, Wreckage is a modern day Romeo and Juliet.
