Harbrace Reader For Canadians

Want to become a better writer? Looking to convince people? To be objective, subjective or both? Anyone wanting to learn the secrets to great writing needs to have a book like this. I am using it for a University class that I am currently enrolled in and it has helped my writing more than I could have ever imagined. It teaches the basic principles of successful writing and is a collection of different essays on various topics. The chapters include such things as: description, narration, illustration, defintion, process, comparison and contrast, division and classification, cause and effect, persuasion and argument, and variations on a theme.Just by reading through the different essays it has helped me compose more pursuasive arguments as well as able to compare and contrast different issues effectively. The best advice I have ever recieved froma professor was by one that I have this semester. He said that a writershould always try andwriteon the topic that the other students wouldn't normally write on. When givenan assignment withmany different options, he said to try and pick the one that others wouldn't because it will make your writing stand out. He argued this by saying that by the time a professor reads 20 or more essays, he wants something fresh and new, not what he has read 19 times already. He also said that it is bestto try and take the side of the argument that the reader wouldn't expect because that too, willkeep your reader interested. For example, if you are given a choice to write on the best kind of marriage, whether you beleive in what you are writing or not, try not to say that the best marriage is one that is blissfully happy. Select one that is all about passion and money and argue your point. It will keep the reader interested and it will help your writing because you have to work harder at making it sound convincing. These are things that I learned through this bookand with the help of my professor of course, and are things that I normally wouldn't have thought about doing. The best essay that I have read so far in thiscollection is How to say nothing in 500 words by Paul Roberts. He shows writers how 500 words can mean the exact same thingin a lot less, but it is a bad habit of students to talk about something and drag it on in order to make sure that they have their word limit rather than making sure their essays are full of relevant content. All in all, this book is an excellent collection of essays, and a must have for all those who want to become better writers. I still have so much more to readthat will help me become the writer that I hope to be.
