(Anne Rice)
The story is being told by Jonathan - an historian who specializes in the Babylonian times. In the background there isthe murder of a young girl - Esther Belkin, the daughter of the multibillionaire Gregory Belkin ? who is also the head of a fanatic religious cult.Jonathan went to his cabin in the mountains, there he fell ill. Azriel came to him and saved him. He asked him to write his story. From now on, Azriel tells hi tale to Jonathan in parts. Azriel was a young son to a wealthy Jewish family in Babylon after the exodus. Since he was young he was able to see ghosts - ghosts that could be seen by powerful clerics and seers. The most powerful ghosts were worshiped like gods, and Azriel befriended Murdoch - the god of Babylon. When his little secret talent was found, he got into trouble. The Babylonians were loosing the fight for the Persians, and the persian king wanted a quiet conquest - he needed a god to announce his coming. Azriel was chosen to become one such god. Through an ancient ceremony he becomes Azriel ? the angel. His soul is trapped in his bones until a master calls him.In the story he passes through a few masters ? some of them teach him, some of them make him do things and others he kills for their evil. He learned about his powers - water made hime stronger (all ghosts love water), he could fly, he could materialize and even take over people bodies. He was alsotaught about the meaning of life - love and knowledge by his first and powerful wizard master. Ever since he's been through some points in history. One of his masters made him so angry, he decieded that no one is worthy of calling him again, and he started killing those who summoned him.Eventually he is summoned without the bones by Esther or Esther's mother. He witnessesEsther's murder, and avenges her. He follows Jonathan to his cabin in the mountains, saves his life from fever and tells himthis tale. From here, Azriel is going to figure out all about Gregory ? his plans and his connection to the murder. He finds out the Gregory was a son to a family of Hasidim and had an identical twin brother. He also discovers that Esther knew this brother, and that it made Gregory angry. He contacts Gregory's grandfather, who is a powerful Hasid, and becomes his ally after Gregory kidnap his brother.Eventually, with the help of Esther's dying mother, Azriel unravel Belkin's plans to take over the world with a coordinated biological attack over large parts of the world. Part of his plan is to use his twin brother in order to fake his death and rise as a Messiah. Azriel fools him and spoil his plans, thus saving humanity from a catastrophe. In the end, Jonathan writes the book about Azriel and keeps looking for him, but Azriel is being seen only briefly and doesn't show up.
