Conrad The Factory-made Boy
(Christine Nostlinger)

Publicidade
It starts with Mrs Bartolotti eating a good sensible German breakfastin her rocking chair and getting it all down her and not worrying aboutthe mess, but just hoping around the room on one leg to shake off thecrumbs. Because she isnt sensible or conforming at all. Unlike most ofthe people in the neighbourhood who dont really speak to her and thinkher odd. Then after breakfast she wonders whether to do any of her workor not and if she feels desperate enough for money to do any or just goback to sleep. In the first pages it covers food, exercise, beingspoken to nicely when being asked to do anything, pets, hygiene, romance and economics and all in a fun way. Then Conrad arrives by postfrom the factory as a ready made seven year old boy, advanced for hisage and well behaved to the point of brainwashing. Trained by thefactory to always obey orders. Mrs Bartolotti takes him in as her childand wishes he had a spirit of rebellion in him although her gentlemenfriend Mr Thomas the chemist thoroughly approves of Conrads goodbehaviour. Anachistic really against being too good, steady, tidy, necessary, sensible, everyday, proper, manners, usual, housewife andright and fitting, all the words Mrs Bartolotti really hates. Maybe asa reaction to communism or fascism in the nineteen seventies Then whenthe factory wants him back the rebellion in Conrad becomes essential sothat he can learn not to always obey orders.
