Iacocca- An Autobiography
(Lee Iacocca with William Novak)

Publicidade
Lee Iacocca's autobiography written in collaboration with
journalist William Novak is a book on general management, personal
management, crisis management, auto industry and above all
psychology rolled into one.
The book chronicles Iacocca's rise to Presidency of the Ford
Motor Company after joining the firm as a student engineer, his
fallout with Henry Ford II and the story of resurgence in Chrysler.
Iacocca after joining Ford in 1946 as a student engineer scaled
the ranks in the company through hard work and pure determination.
He was instrumental in the phenomenal success of the car model
'Mustang' in the 1960s which rewrote the history of the US auto
industry.
After the success of 'Mustang', Iacocca was given a major
promotion and was made the vice-president and later with the
triumphant introduction of 'Mark III' the protege of Henry Ford II
became the president of the company in 1970.
After becoming the President of Ford, Iacocca had problems with
the acts of intimidation and autocratic policies of the 'big boss'
and Henry started to decimate Iacocca in his own way.
In a meeting in which Henry conveyed the message to Iacocca that
he will no longer be part of the Ford familiy, he said, '' There
comes a time when I have to do things my way. I have decided to
reorganise the company. This is one of those things that you hate to
do, but you have to do it any way. It's been a nice association, but
I think you should leave. It's best for the company.''
Iacocca vividly describes the feeling of vacuum in his mind and
the trauma of his family members in facing the precarious situtaion.
But at the same time Iacocca's resoluteness and determination to
overcome the crisis can be felt in his documentation of the
situation.
The headlines in 'Detroit Free Press' on November 2 1978
'Chrysler Losses Are Worst Ever' and 'Lee Iacocca joins Chrysler'
depict the hard road ahead for the resolute man. It was clear that
Iacocca was boarding a sinking ship as the company had announced its
$ 160 million thrid-quarter losses, the worst in its history.
The trunaround magic that he enacted in Chrysler can inspire and
teach management students the world-over.
His relentless effort to get loan guarantees for the company, the
efforts in inspiring the employees, the ingenuity in designing cars
and the marketing strategies to sell cars in Chrysler were
incredible.
