The Enchanter
(Vladimir Nabokov)

Publicidade
The author, Vladimir Nabokov, states in his introduction that this novella is the forerunner to his novel Lolita that was written some years later after having emigrated to the United States.

An older man in his forties yearns for little girls, special kinds of little girls and while he sits on a park bench he becomes especially interested in and enamored of a little girl who is about 10 years old and skating around on her roller skates. He then comes to the park repeatedly especially to watch the little girl while at the same time indulging in his perverted fantasy. Every glimpse of her is a turn-on and he renounces his evil will yet at the same time succumbs to it.

He devises a scheme whereby he will get closer to the little girl so as to eventually capture and seduce her. While sitting in the park, he listens intently to any information that he can garner about where she lives and with whom and finds out the name and address of the mother of the child. He learns that the mother rents out rooms. He rents a room from the mother and moves into the child's home. He becomes friendly with the mother and they eventually marry. Shortly thereafter she dies and he has the child to himself.

The conclusion shows the child having discovered the trick. Will he succeed in his perverted fantasy or will he be discovered?
