Peace Is Possible -The Life and Message of Prem RawatPossibly the most fascinating aspectof this biography is the two-fold constant underlying Prem Rawat?s life story. Inwardly,he maintains an unwavering sense of purpose; outwardly, he undergoes a continuous, almost mind-boggling personal evolution. His message never varies, yet hisexpression and delivery are in a relentless process of refinement. It seems from early childhood, heknew exactly what he was about, and what his aim in life would be. Thephotographs in the book reflect this presence and clarity, visible most notablyin his eyes. Perhaps it was this sense of purpose, this absence of self-doubt,which enabled him to easily shed the constricting taboos and cultural trappingsof his native land and become a liberated ?citizen of the world?. In turn, itenabled him to constantly perfect the presentation of his message and moreaccurately portray the process of preparing for, receiving, and enjoying thegift of ?Knowledge? that he offers. Overcoming tremendous personalchallenges ? the loss of his father at age eight; accepting the responsibilityof being the master for thousands of students, while keeping up his academic studiesin school; venturing out on his own in foreign countries at thirteen; beingdisowned by his mother and defamed by his elder brother at sixteen; facing downan organization bent on defining and controlling him and his message at nineteen? Prem Rawat demonstrated profound character. That he simultaneously managed toremain above it all, keep a joyful attitude and inspire others to do the same,is truly astonishing. Difficulties that might easily have destroyed the averageyouth seemed only to deepen his determination to remove obstacles for those whoaspire to learn from him. All this he accomplished before reaching what oursociety recognizes as adulthood. His example represents an unspoken assertion:he followed his heart to personal victory and freedom; so can you. His mastermade the journey possible for him; he can make the journey possible for you. Reading the book, I found itinteresting that whereas Mr. Rawat?s brother, Raja Ji, was able to break free ofthe tradition and culture of his upbringing and follow his own independent convictions, the other two brothers were not. Googling Bal Bhagwan Ji, the eldest, whoseized the family?s assets in India and gathered a following of his own, Ifound that although he speaks highly of his father and purports to continue histeachings, the message has become muddied by social and political concerns; itsuniversality seems trapped in Hindu-based expression and traditional lore.Curiously, on his website, there is no mention anywhere of any brothers, offamily infighting, or lawsuits. He doesn?t explain that although he initiallyrecognized his youngest brother as the master who would continue his father?swork, he later decided to claim that title for himself. It might easily beassumed from the material on the website that he was an only child, destined toassume his father?s mantle, though in fact nothing could be farther from thetruth. In the process of locating BalBhagwan Ji?s website, I came across a staggering number of Indian gurus, swamisand other ?spiritual leaders?, each with their own variants of a timelessmessage, each giving their own explanations and making their own claims. Themore prominent the personality, I noted, the greater the presence ofdetractors, each of these with their own axe to grind. Who knew that evenMother Teresa inspired jealousy and hatred in some people? Prem Rawat?s message has been simple, straightforward and constant, throughout his life: What you are looking for iswithin, inside of you. Peace is possible. If you have trouble finding it, hecan help. A remarkable message, and an unequivocal promise. His resolve tospread that message and keep that promise drives him to evolve as a human being. His passion for what he does enables him to freely discard whatever may inhibithis progress, refining his presentation in order to reach every single personas an individual, regardless of their beliefs, culture, nationality orcircumstances. In this age, there is no dearth ofpeople trumpeting their sagacity. We?re bombarded by trendy self-help punditswho offer a dizzying array of advice, explanations, ?channeled? information, mentaland physical exercises, spiritual paths, twelve-step programs ? endless (andoften conflicting) assertions. Clearly, for anyone seeking thatpeace and happiness we all crave, there is and has always been only one litmustest: Did you finally get what you?ve always wanted ? are you satisfied ? or not?Arguments may abound, but the human heart has the last word. When the heart iscontent, everything falls into place, questions and doubts evaporate and nofurther explanations are necessary.
