Riobaldo And Hitler

The writer, Roberto Pompeu de Toledo, in an article published by a Brazilian Magazine - Veja - in February 14th, 2007, trascribes notations contained in João Guimarães Rosa´s daily, the greatest Brazilian writer in 20th century, when he´s been a consul in Hamburg (Germany) from 1938 to 1942. In four of these notes, we can glimpe as it was the beginning Hitler´s government persecution against the Jews; in February 23th,1940, Guimarães Rosa writed in his daily that in Bidweis (south of Bohemia), Jews only could locomote by streetcar on its plataforms. It was the first citu to introduce this, complete him; in September 22th, 1941, he teels that was the first day that Jews were obligations to use a badge in their clothes; in October 10th, 1941 he says that Jewish women had been crying at the consulate, because they had received an order for evacuation from Hamburg. Horrible, Guimarães writed. He describes a strange story about a German woman, frau Wetterhuse. She was 90 years old and had a daughter - Angelika, considered a "mischling" because Mrs. Wetterhuse has been married a Jew. She said to the consul, certainly to save Angelika, that her daughter wasn´t her husband´daughter but Angelika was daughter of a Brasilian man. Guimarães Rosa, in this case, didn´t make anything for the old woman and her daughter, because there wasn´t any prove about this occurrence. However he helped a lot of Jews to run away from Germany. He emitted more visa than the quota estipulated in law. For this he obteined the recognition o Israel´s government. Roberto Pompeu de Toledo in his article that called - Riobaldo and Hitler - didan´t only have historical intention but he want to show that Guimar~es Rosa, has cobntinued his literature in Germany, among bombs, destructions, death and Riobaldo, protagonist of his most important Guimarães Rosa´book "Grande Sertão: Veredas" must have been bred in that sad period.
