The Rainbow
(DH LAWRENCE)
This 1915 novel has been described as one of DH Lawrence's greatest works rivalled only by the later novel "women in love". 'The Rainbow', is not strictly speaking a love story, it focuses on the impact that love does have on the lives of its lead characters. The underlying theme being that eventually love must come to terms with the individuality of those that love. 'The Rainbow' is a fictional account of four generations of a Nottinghamshire family of farmer landowners. From the rambling rural setting of Nottinghamshire, the plot meanders to locations as diverse as London, Derby, Africa and India. In this story Lawrence lives in the mind of his characters relishing their thoughts and feelings over words. He employs conversation sparingly, yet the novel effectively demonstrtes how personalities are shaped by factors as extraenneous to genetics as birth order and school. The novel captures the fear, anger, hatred, prejudice, and love that can typically characterise family relations. In its sixten chapters, 'The Rainbw' chronicles the upbringing of shy Tom Brangwen and his subsequent marriage to taciturn Polish widow, Lydia Lensky. It describes the progression of Lydia's daughter, from hostile Anna Lensky, to regal Anna Brangwen. She is Brangwen not just on account of the strong bond that evolves between Tom and her, but also by virtue ofher virtually incestuos marriage to Tom's nephew, Will Brangwen. Ursula, the daughter of Will and anna is fiercely independent and discerning and her infatuation with Anton Skrebensky does not survive the inevitable scrutiny of her distrustful nature. Nor indeed does her romantic liason with school mistress, Winifred Inger, conquer her will to be free. The characters are poignant and provoking immersed as they are in the palpable angst that suffuses all their relationships. Through the tides of marriages, births and deaths, the family remains curiously united by a love that overrides all else.
