Successful bussiness man, Nick Burnham is trapped in a marriage with awoman who is continually unfaithful. In order to keep his relationshipwith his son, Nick knows that he has no other option but to remainmarried to his wife regardless of her wandering eye. On a voyage aboard the Normandie, Nick meets LianeDe Villiers, wife of the French Ambassador to the U.S. Unhappy with hisown marriage, Nick admires the relationship that Liane has with herhusband and soon develops a connection with her in which he is able toshare his experiences. The two become friends during the Normandie'sjourney but part ways after they arrive in France. In spite of thefears from news about Hitler's actions in Europe, both Nick and Lianehave plans with their families to remain in France for long periods oftime. Within a year of their arrival, tensions in Europe continue tobuild until England officially declares war. The beginning of World WarII leads to both Nick and Liane's secret departure on a fishing boatheaded for the U.S. During their time together on the boat, Nick aLiane are caught up in a passionate love affair. When the voyage isover, they once again part ways knowing that they cannot continue theirrelationship.
